Moral policing is a word Indians are accustomed to. It is a kind of vigilantism that certain Indian citizens endemic to a certain locality enforce quite brutally. This vigilante group enforces a code of morality without any legal authorization whatsoever. Moral policing is one of the biggest vices that a developing India has to offer which promotes a psychotic mob lynching mentality between groups. Instances of this threat can be found from the north to down in the south. To name a few, siblings attacked by a gang on a conjecture of them being lovers, two teenagers were publicly humiliated and the boy beat up for visiting a tourist spot and sitting in their car alone, Couples were thrashed by a mob and their faces were blackened for sitting together in a lake bank on valentine’s day. The root cause can be traced to the supposed development of the country. The 21st century has bridged the gap between western and eastern civilization’s customs. Like how American’s started incorporating yoga as an exercise, young Indians started With the rise of social media and other factors which are vital to a developing country such as India, the younger generations are developing a westernized culture which certain older citizens find demeaning and worrisome. From their perspective India has its own culture, customs, and traditions to follow from the time of its inception, and adopting westernized trends like dating, women showing skin, women drinking et cetera is an insult to the prevalent but has-been culture. The mob(sters) act based on their whims in lynching the “guilty” by either thrashing them within an inch of their life or exposing them on social media and the circumstances gassed up. They have no qualms about public smoking, drinking, but the slightest display of PDA’s tick them off. In the denouement, the Indian culture and traditions should be protected but not at the expense of other’s life, health, or social standing. People should try to incorporate a progressive mentality and consider the fact that the world around them is changing and striving to be arrogant and ignorant is not doing anyone any favors. If you happen to be a victim or come across a clear and genuine case of moral policing know that the law is on your side and should calmly contact the police in the nearby vicinity. As long as the law is on your side there is nothing anyone can do to you.
